Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and New UnrestATLANTA, GA - His legacy intact, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s holiday is not being celebrated without controversy. Details of a fallout with Jesse Jackson, books chronicling extramarital affairs, and his children's public fight over selling The King Center for Nonviolent Social Change are all in the news.
King's flaws cannot diminish his accomplishments, but his family's flaws are hindering theirs. There can be little doubt that much of the attention to King's personal failures has more to do with the economics of book selling than the preservation of history. Similarly, there always were, and always will be, those who have only political use for King. Still, Howard Dean's new t-shirt stating that "King Cheated On His Wife So That You Could Have A Day Off Of Work: Vote Democrat!" seems misguided. USC to Host Colts in 'Disappointment Bowl'PASADENA, CA - No two teams were more heavily praised in their respective leagues this year than the NFL's Colts and the NCAA's Trojans. Article after article delved into the possibility that they were the best teams ever. That they hadn't won the 2006 championship did not deter the writers. That both failed to do so seems no more likely than being struck by lightning while being attacked by a shark holding a winning lottery ticket, at least if sports writers are to be believed. Still, I would watch the 2006 Disappointment Bowl, if someone was smart enough to arrange it. Columns |
How Long Before War in Iran?LONDON, ENGLAND - World leaders met to discuss just what the heck to do with Iran and its pesky nuclear programs.
Iran, with proposed "peaceful little nuclear center" highlighted. Representatives from Britain, Germany, France, China, and Russia put their heads together, while the U.S. urged quick action. For those who haven't been keeping score, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has recently been making headlines by claiming the Holocaust never occurred and that he'd like to cause one by eradicating the state of Israel. As such, it does not seem likely that Israel will refrain from bombing Iran's nuclear reactors based upon Iran's claims that the world's second leading oil producer is only interested in nuclear technology for its energy applications. LocalKeep Radio FreeCHUM BUCKET, RI - Perhaps you're one of those people trying to decide whether you should go with Sirius Satellite Radio or XM Satellite Radio. How about neither? Both are subscription services, generally requiring a long term commitment and upfront purchase / installation of equipment. Why would you do that when you can tune in free radio? The marketers will tell you that they're giving you better reception, commercial free programming, and exclusive content. That may be true, but remember, cable television used to be commercial free too. As for exclusive content, how long does it take everyone to copy anything that is even remotely successful? And anyway, how much do you want to spend to listen to Howard Stern groping women with self-esteem issues? I'll stick with my UHF, thanks. |
